The Swedish government will soon instruct the Armed Forces to study the possibility of transferring Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to radio Ekot .
It is noted that the government wants to receive information about how the provision of aircraft to Ukraine will affect Sweden’s defense capability and how quickly the state will be able to receive new Gripen as compensation.
In addition, the government must determine how Ukrainian pilots and other ground personnel on airplanes should be trained.
Gripen fighters
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a fourth generation multi-role fighter aircraft that has been designed with versatility in mind. Formally, it belongs to the fighter class, but it was conceived as a multi-role aircraft that is capable of performing different tasks.
At the end of May, the Swedish government allowed Ukrainian pilots to undergo training on the JAS 39 Gripen fighter . They will be able to train on simulators and make test flights.
The Office of the President reported that the transfer of Swedish Gripen to Ukraine should be coordinated with other countries , as well as with the supply of F-16s.
At the same time, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson later stated that the country needs aircraft for its own defense , because the country’s application to join the Alliance has not yet been completed. However, he did not rule out the transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine in the future.
